About the Project:
The beauty of a showhouse is that each room is a blank canvas, providing each designer with complete creative freedom. Hepfer decided that if she could design a room for anyone, dead or alive, that the fashion icon Coco Chanel would be the dream client. Chanel rose to fame in the 1920’s, which was the perfect parallel to the McLean House built in 1928. Playing on a black and white theme, she designed a chic dressing room in a petite 3rd floor room. The goal was to achieve a classic and timeless look by mixing styles inherent to the era, including French 40s inspired furniture, along with elements that are more current such as a luxurious geometric back and white wool rug. Adding to the black and white contrast, Hepfer used white lacquered quilted vinyl wallpaper which she trimmed in pristine black grosgrain ribbon. Chanel loved the reflective and glamorous quality of mirrors, so Hepfer mirrored the dormers and incorporated mirrored furniture in the room. Also, mindful of Chanel’s passion for jewellery, Hepfer embellished the room with fabulous gold and glass accessories as the perfect finishing touch.
